Ariana Grande released the deluxe version of her “Positions” album this past Friday, and it quickly became the favorite new music release this week, according to Billboard. The album contains four new songs, including the 34+35 remix with Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion. Though “Positions” is going to continue her pop reign on the charts, it really doesn’t offer anything new.

Most of the songs on “Positions” build off of the trap and R&B sounds that fueled her last two albums. However, unlike “Thank U, Next” the songs are more about falling in love rather than heartbreak. Her voice does sound better than ever on this album, soaring above to new octaves and proving her capability. The highlight of the album by far is “POV”, a song that contains both vulnerability and impressive vocals, with Ariana singing about how she wants to see herself like her partner does, “for all of my pretty, and all of my ugly too.” The lead single “Positions” is a light and carefree radio song that uses acoustic guitars and talks about doing different things for someone you love.

However, apart from these few songs, most of the songs on the album are a little slow and do not carry the same high energy and appeal as her previous radio hits. Even “Off The Table” with The Weeknd seems to lag on forever in what was a highly anticipated duet.

Overall, “Positions” is an album that will for sure keep Ariana on the charts, but it isn’t quite up to the standards that her previous albums set.
